Maths

Our aim:

We are committed to fostering a deep and lasting understanding of mathematics through a mastery-based approach, where every child can experience success. Our vision is to empower every student to become confident and proficient mathematicians, equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary for success in an ever-changing world.

The key expectations of our mastery curriculum reflects that of the national curriculum for mathematics. As a result of our curriculum, we want children to:

  • Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately
  • Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language

  • Solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions

Foundational knowledge

Our teachers have a secure understanding of how foundational knowledge builds through Maths across year groups. We track this rigorously, so that any gaps are addressed quickly. Our lessons are designed and structured to have a focus on developing fluency in foundational knowledge.

Presentation is key!

We recognise the importance of presentation in Maths. We understand that this can be a barrier to pupils' accuracy. Through our lessons, this is a focus and teaching point. We try to reduce pupils writing on worksheets, so that they become experts writing digits on the squared paper.
